I feel like at this time he was trying to be a sort of r&b artist, but for whatever reason it didn't work for him after this album. I mean it seemed like he was about to be the next big thing in r&b, what with his amazing feature on Chris Brown's back to sleep remix, and this album, but afterwards I feel he went for a more mainstream pop direction, I feel like there might be people in the industry trying to stop him from becoming the r&b star he wanted to be.

If a person claims to not like the album, said person wouldn't be telling the tRuTh...see what I did there. No seriously though, here's my problem: I can't freaking sing along,, the vocals are too magnificent.

I was not particularly fond of OD and zany seemed a little boring. Pillow talk was not one of my favorite songs and it seemed rather boring but once I heard " It's You" I fell in love with this song. I love the high notes on that and I purchased " rear view" since it seems rather different than the rest of the album.

Zayn is just AMAZAYN! When I heard the first song, I knew it was a good album. I love EVERY SONG. I hear Justin Timberlake, Drake, Justin Bieber, Halsey, Nick Jonas, Ariana Grande, Aleo Blacc, Dove Cameron, and even a little bit of Niall Horan (from 1D). All combined to make one voice. I hear Justin Timberlake, Justin Beiber, Drake, and Nick Jonas in the lower notes of his voice, and the beats too. Halsey comes in with the overall tone that NO other R&B/low cut hip-hop singer has. Aloe Blacc is simple, original, and gifted- all three things that Zayn has. Ariana Grande and Dove Cameron are combined for the higher notes. Both girls can sing like CRAZY. I mean CRAZY. So can Zayn! Niall comes in with the similarity lyrically- talks about women in a way to make them feel good and treats every girl like a princess. Anyways, he’s overall the next Usher, Celo Green, and Ed Sheeran. Boy has a wonderful talent, so glad he left 1D. I always thought he was boring, but the boys never let him speak. He spoke with this album. This album- yes it talks about sex. But it does it in a way where women don’t feel dirty, used, stupid, ugly, and hated (listen to the song Famous by Kanye West to see what I’m talking about). Sure, he can talk about less, and as a 12 year old fan girl, he truly is a gem from heaven!

It was okay, but nothing memorable. He was better in 1D, sad how he bragged on how this would be better when it is not.

This album contains a lot of different content, there’s different rhythms, melodies and beats used in the album, the songs are different from each other. If you’ve been following the artist career you’d probs would know the meaning of the songs and how most of the lyrics of each song are related to it. But if you’re new to all of his new stuff since he started his solo career you will appreciate all the good quality lyrical content. He also added an Urdu song (track 7) and it’s beautiful!

I literally came here to read nice reviews of this INCREDIBLE ALBUM. and what did i get, bitter people who have nothing nice to say and are just WRONG. This album is so amazing, along with icarus falls. I’m so happy that zayn got to create his own sound after 1D, and what he’s done is just incredible. I am in love with his voice and his writing and over all, he’s one of my favorite music artist ever. And so go around saying his fans are all teenage girls, his music means so much more to me than any close minded person who’s still mad he left one direction could ever know, love you zayn 💛💛

I'm a lover of music. Recently, I had to buy a 128gb iPod just so I can hold all of the music I have on one iPod. So for me to say that I listen to an album that came out almost two years ago DAILY? It's an iconic one. I'm a little biased, because I do love Zayn himself, but I think my bias lets me make an accurate, thoughtful review of his incredibly personal debut album since I know a little about what he's writing and singing about. Coming from a working class British-Pakistani family and growing up as a fan of his dad's taste in music (old 90s rnb, hip hop, etc.), it's no surprise to me that Zayn never felt represented in the pop group he used to be in (let's not forget to also take into account all the racism, islamophobia, etc., of course). But there was also the aspect wherein Zayn was never allowed the same creative freedoms that others had, which was made obvious by how his input in the sound and also the lyrics of the group's songs was never considered. We can see how his old group's management cared more about supporting the others than him by the INCREDIBLE demo he wrote for the group that never got made: I Won't Mind; ask any fan of Zayn their thoughts on I Won't Mind and you'll get a positive, almost dramatically emotional response to it ("don't look around / 'cause love is blind / and darling right now I can't see you" is a lyric that gets me choked up to this very day). Zayn's lyrics are incredibly overlooked, because people would rather focus on anything other than how incredibly talented Zayn is, so let me go ahead and state point blank that Zayn has the best lyrics out of anyone from the group he used to be in. The lyrics on this album alone—which are personal, honest and, above all else, VULNERABLE—show that Zayn values sincerity and music that actually means something to the artist that writes it. And that aspect of the album puts the incredible display of vocal versatility and the ingenious genre mixing on the back burner for me, because when I come back to the album each day, it's to listen to the lyrics and be alone with myself and Zayn's personal thoughts. Mind of Mine is aptly named, because when you listen to what Zayn sings about (specifically in rEaR vIeW, tRuTh, lUcOzAde, SHE DON'T LOVE ME, and INTERMISSION: FLOWER—which is sung in Urdu, a song specifically written by Zayn for his father) you actually learn about him. You connect with him. This isn't an album put out to make money. It's an album to vent. It's an album that breathes for all the times Zayn couldn't while in the group that all but put tape over his mouth. It's an album to show who Zayn really is. It's to, as the intro song MiNd Of MiNdd states, open everyone up to what's inside of his mind. To be as authentic and vulnerable as a person can be (and considering how Zayn is often vilainized due to racism, classism, and islamophobia, it's almost an act of defiance by being so candid about who Zayn REALLY is despite what the media tries to spin). And THAT is why I listen to it every day. The full, velvety vocals and daring plays on multiple different genres in one album are just a pretty bonus.

This album never gets old!!! Every single song is amazing!!

Love 1D and Zayn in 1D and that really suited him because you could let his lack of enunciation slide because he wasn't the sole focus of the song. This is a great debut album and very unexpected from a former boy band member. Some of my favourite songs are Drunk, Borderz, Rear View and Blue. I also love the Indian influences that he included.
