John Mayer - Heavier Things

About Heavier Things by John Mayer Album

Heavier Things is the second major label studio album by singer-songwriter/guitarist John Mayer, released in 2003. Since his successful debut album, 2001's Room for Squares, Mayer had gained popularity as a creative and thoughtful songwriter, and this characteristic shines through on Heavier Things. The title of the album itself is a subtle response to certain criticism of Mayer's music. The album debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, selling 317,000 copies in its first week. Despite some negative criticism towards Mayer's songwriting, Heavier Things received generally positive reviews from music critics. Background: Mayer felt he could be more relaxed and focus more on his art while making Heavier Things. With Jack Joseph Puig as producer, loops and horns were more prominently featured. Mayer took greater control of the creative side with this album; much of the album was recorded in his New York City apartment. He also got final approval on all radio-edits. Columbia Records used a conservative marketing campaign to promote the album. Columbia Records Group president Will Botwin says. "We think we're being smart. It's a long-term project. We understand what we're creating is a career. Effectively, that's the message: Keep the hype at bay." In keeping with that gameplan, the album's first single, "Bigger Than My Body", only went to radio a few weeks before the album's release; promotional broadcasts of the album were limited to MTV.com and Mayer's official site, both of whom began streaming the complete album the September 2 before its release. Scheduled television appearances included Saturday Night Live on Oct. 4 and several late shows.Columbia Records thought it was important to put Mayer in talk show-type scenarios before the album release to help bring focus to his art and to his singer/songwriter career; to steer away from the fame and celebrity hype. Singles Despite being "delayed" on the radio, the lead single "Bigger Than My Body" gained commercial and critical success. "Clarity" was the second single released from Heavier Things. Although the song usually receives rare radioplay, it is one of Mayer's fan favorites, and is normally performed at Mayer's concerts. The song received very positive reviews from critics, mostly being praised for its relaxing style and beat. "Daughters" was the last single released from Heavier Things. The song has become a huge commercial success, and has received largely positive reviews: many critics have hailed the song as Mayer's best yet. Upon its release, the album received generally positive reviews from music critics; it holds an aggregate score of 67/100 at Metacritic. Billboard magazine stated that it "firmly establishes him as a legitimate--albeit still puppy-eyed--singer/songwriter." Chicago Tribune writer Allison Stewart gave the album a favorable review and wrote that Mayer " crafted a sturdy, soulful pop album that credibly expands upon — but never abandons — his core sound". Despite writing that "his self-conscious lyrics can get in the way", Russell Baillie of The New Zealand Herald praised Mayer's musicianship and gave the album 4 out of 5 stars. Rolling Stone magazine's James Hunter called Heavier Things an "equally available yet more sophisticated album" than Room for Squares. In his own review for Esquire, Mayer gave the album a "B minus", adding, "Am I the only one who finds this record creepy to make out to?" Spin said, "Sadly, Mayer's idea of a good time involves hiring jazz musicians to make himself sound like '80s James Taylor. Accolades Mayer earned his first number-one single with "Daughters" as well as a 2005 Grammy for Song of the Year, beating out fellow contenders Alicia Keys and Kanye West. He dedicated the award to his grandmother, Annie Hoffman, who died in May 2004. He also won Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, beating Elvis Costello, Prince, and Seal for the award. At the 37th Annual Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in 2006, Mayer was honored with the Hal David Starlight Award. Track listing All tracks written by John Mayer except where noted. - "Bigger Than My Body"

Love it! Awesome, Awesome, AWESOME!!!!!!!!!! Espcly biggr than my body! People who rate it lower than 4 stars must really not know what good music is!! Keep goin' John Mayer!!i

- Wow!

Very good album! Only problem I have with it is that the song Clarity was mastered very poorly. The music distorts a lot during the chorus with the kick drum. Other than that awesome album.

- Daughters!!

Great songs on this album. Obviously, Clarity, Bigger Than My Body, and Daughters are the highlights but there are other gems as well. Enjoy!

- class class class and more class

Let me begin by saying that I am not a person who just loves an artist and in doing so loves everything that the person/band makes no matter how it sounds. That's stupid. I listen and love ALL music, and appreciate each genre for what it is. I appreciate the artists/bands that try to have their own sound and that are unique but also can play quality music, not something that can be done by most people in less than an hour and can be found deep in cracks in the underground of music (don't get me wrong though good music can def be found there). Soft Rock/Pop Rock for me, may be the most emotional music out there and that's one of the reasons why I always look for new artists in that field. With all of the great music that I've found I'm always amazed at how much quality is coming out of the speakers when John Mayer is playing somewhere near me. EVERY album he has made is just brilliant. Every song he has recorded is timeless. EVERY ONE. There are certain albums of his that I like more than others he has done and "Heavier Things" along with "Room for Squares" have got to be at the top of the list battling with his most popular album "Continuum". It always amazes me how little likes, ratings, or stars great albums like these always seem to get on iTunes especially when being compared to stuff on the radio today. There is no excuse for anyone who didn't and won't give this album the full five stars.

- John mayer

Mm lovvvee thiiisss ssoonnnggg !!<3

- A clear Fragment of my faint childhood

I can explain, i'm not as young as you think, i'm only 13, but my mom would pop this into the stereo when I was just a tot, we lived in a very grungy enviorment (not exactly a ghetto) and this music reminds me of those days, back when most of the time in the house was spent in the garage, washing a truck, back when lunch was mostly buttered sphagetti and salad. My childhood was simple, and I miss those days, this music doesn't need me to try to remember, clear memories of these songs fade into my mind, showing themselves like reflections of fragmented time that have been fogged up by a complicated life. Thanks John Mayer, i'll never forget this album. Hope you'll release another album like this...

- His Finest.

Continuum may have a few gems, but pound for pound I believe this is John’s best album. 3 words: split screen sadness.

- Album that confirmed Mayer as one of the new Millennium's Best Artists

Daughters still quell's emotion every time I hear it. T_A_L_E_N_T_E_D!

- AMAZING

Not one bad song on the whole cd. Split Screen Sadness is John Mayer's best song. "So I'll check the weather wherever you are 'cause I wanna know if you can see the stars tonight."

- John Mayer is amazing

This song is truly just great. Not to mention this album! the way the music comes together in perfect synchronization is unreal. This is a great piece of music!

- Five

It is so touching to hear a song from your childhood

- Great Album

This will be my all time favorite album of all time. I can't believe this album is almost ten years old!!! It feels like it just came out yesterday. Thanks for great music John Mayer.

- JM at his finest

I've been listening to this album for some time now and honestly think it is Mayer's best. Although the review at the top is quick to mark down Mayer as a musician, Mayer offers a variety of songs and styles into Heavier Things. He avoids lighthearted lyrics, but strives for lyrics that will actually make you think and find yourself relating to. Mayer shows definite melodic talent all throughout the album with seemingly endless catchy riffs and refreshing chord progressions. I recommend you buy the entire album. Although it appears there are several songs without high popularity ratings, each of the songs will definitely surprise you. Don't be quick to jump over them when hearing only the first 10 seconds of the song. Each song brings a unique idea to the table and no song is just an "album filler." This is a must buy.

- :)

Love it :)))

- Daughters

Hands down "daughters" is my favorite song of all time. Ever since I was little my Dad would play Daughters and Sweet Pea by Amos Lee. It was our two little songs. And ever since I've loved them to death. Thank you

- Makes sense

Genius is cool. I can understand why it recommened this for me.

- Three Amazing Songs

I just bought three songs from this CD and they are amazing. John Mayer is amazing with Clarity, Bigger Than My Body, and Daughters....

- Life changing

John mayers music has changed my life. His lyrics keep me thinking and his ability to take the words directly out of my head and sang them so beautifully is crazy. He has a song to fit every situation

- Heavier Things

This is one of my personal favorite John Mayer albums. This album has a great flow, track after track. This album also has great vocals, great drum solos, and great guitar solos as well. Finally, the instruments wrap around the vocals like no other, and intertwine perfectly. Definitely looking forward to the next limited play album, and extended play album from John Mayer.

- John Mayer is great

John Mayer is a great singer and I like his music.

- Amazing

I own and love all of John Mayer's albums, but this is still the one I listen to the most. Definitely my favorite.

- Enjoyed it more than his debut album

John Mayer is bound to stir up discussion, it seems, no matter what he does. Whether he sounds too close to Dave Matthews or whether (like here) he distances himself a bit from that sound. Whether he works on the guitar more (as in his debut) or whether he puts in more electronic elements distorting the original sound. In any case, controversy drags attention to him and it is one thing he deserves. His sound in this album is strengthened by a solid band (among others, to be found is Matt Chamberlain who's played drums for the likes of Tori Amos and Brad Meldhau) and though the lyrics might not be the deepest he's written, the album as a whole has a more original and mature feel than his debut album, which did happen to sound like a Dave Matthews ripoff more than once. Due to its variety of tempos and rhythms included in this work and the somewhat "heavier" electronic component (interestingly enough a little song tempo chart by sequence is included in the booklet!) it remindes of Clapton's 'Pilgrim' at times, such as the case with "Come Back to Bed". It is no coincidence, therefore, that he shared the Holiday Blues Revue ay NYC this past December alongside blues legends Buddy Guy and Double Trouble (the formed band of the late Stevie Ray Vaughn). All in all, a step in the right direction, an evolution from his first album and most definitely a young artist to keep a close eye on: if he doesn't steer away from his current path, he's bound to becoming a musical legend of our times.

- Music is so powerful

This album takes me back to one of the most memorable years with my husband. My favorite album.

- My First Mayer Album

I was 14 yrs old when when this was burned for me at a party… I can't remember the party, but the album in its entirety, I know by heart and still love. This was my soundtrack at 14, I could've swore John Mayer knew me personally and wrote each track about my life and (LAME,lol) 14yr old problems. . . except for "come back to bed"!, not that i didn't love the song!, but at 14, that was too sexual, lol! :)

- Good good job

Great job. The ooooh part in clarity just melts my heart

- A good sophomore album

It's a pretty good little sophomore album that JM was able to put together. I got it for Christmas some years back and enjoy it when i put it in. Pick it up for yourself, now.

- Bigger than my Body

Some jerk who tried out for American Idol took credit for writing "Bigger than my Body"! Good thing he didn't make it to Hollywood.

- Awesome

Great album

- John the Greatest

Love love love all of his songs. I normally do not do reviews, but he deserves the acknowledgment for his work. I hope to hear more like this album from John.

- John was in his bag

He matured with this album. I hate daughters as a song and it is unfortunate that it is on this otherwise it is a flawless album.

- Game changer

I guess there will be certain albums that you will attach with times of your life, and this is def one of those for me.

- Great

Best JM album hands down!

- A worthy follow up

During John’s first three albums, he knew who he was and it showed.

- His Best

This, in my opinion, is John's best album. The songs are beautifully composed and blend together well.

- One of the Best

John Mayer shows much soul and complexity into this album. It builds on top of his last album. The album gives a different sound than any of his other albums, which to me makes this album a must have. RATING: A+

- Great album

I feel like this album is John Mayer's best. Clarity has got to be my all time favorite song of his. The whole album took a little while to grow on me, but it really is incredible.
